November 25, 2012
Thank you to the Sisters and Brothers who travelled to Saint John to attend the Funeral and memorial service for our Brother and friend Dale Clinton.

UPDATE ON BROTHER CLINTON

Dale will be arriving Tuesday at 6pm at the airport. He will be escorted by his brother Chris and dear friend Joe Cormier. The Honour Guard will be there with the pall bearers to welcome him home.

Dale's crew under the direction of Capt. Wayne Connell will escort him with Engine 7 from the airport to the Castle Funeral home.

Those wishing to participate in this short but meaningful ceremony are welcome to attend. For those wishing to attend, the dress will be full dress uniform to line both sides of the hearse as they depart.

Due to the uncertainty of flight arrival and departure times, members participating should be there at 5:00pm to give us time to organize placement of personnel.

Thank you on behalf of Dale's family and friends for the continual support during these hard days.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 24th at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 91 Waterloo Street at 10:00am.

The APPFFA has lost a Brother. Dale Clinton (Local 771) passed away last evening. For those of you who knew Dale he was a true union brother, a hard worker and a loyal friend. Dale's Brother Chris is also a firefighter in Saint John.

Dale will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

January 29, 2012
A tentative agreement was reached between the Cornerbrook firefighters union (L1222) and the city this afternoon. Union spokesperson Peter Daniels says they will hold a membership meeting tomorrow night and a vote will be held sometime between Tuesday and Thursday.

An OPEN LETTER to the APPFFA from Saint John Local 771 president Paul Stackhouse. Saint John Common Council is making significant cuts to the Fire Department Budget forcing the shut down of fire apparatus in the city.

A great public turnout for the September 11 parade held in Saint John NB.

Firefighters from all over New Brunswick were in attendance, and even some from Maine.

Four pipe bands led the parade at Kings Square.

Last night's New Brunswick Memorial Firefighter parade in Fredericton had a great turnout (about 270 firefighters) and great weather!

Congratulations to Doug LeBlanc for being elected as President of the APPFFA and to John Stamp for being elected as a Vice President for Newfoundland. Elections were held at this week's APPFFA convention in Saint John, NB

June 21, 2009 - Cancer Legislation
The New Brunswick Fire Fighters’ Compensation Act has now achieved Royal Assent and is, therefore, law. New Brunswick Fire Fighters have presumptive Cancer Legislation, and coverage for heart injury within 24 hour of attending an incident.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the Line of Duty Death of Brother Bernard “Bernie” W. Timmons at home on Christmas Day surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Bernie was a member of Sydney IAFF No. 2779. Brother Timmins is survived by his Wife and 3 children. The Funeral is, December 29, 2008 at 1400 hrs. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien.

November 20, 2008 - Executive Board Seminar
The APPFFA Exec Board conducted a 1 day seminar for our members in Corner Brook NL. The seminar was well attended and well received. In an interview with the "Western Star" we received front page Coverage! The story was picked up and carried in the St. John's Paper as well. We're province wide. This reflects well on our organization, and our member Locals in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Local 1627 Truro Firefighters are sad to report the passing of retired and Honourary Member Jack Lloyd. Brother Lloyd was a Charter member of both his own local and the APPFFA. Services were held Friday, April 4th in Truro N.S.

January 13, 2007 - Moncton LODD
Brothers and Sisters: It is with the deepest regret and sorrow to report the line of duty death of Fire Prevention Officer Michael Gordon Swetnam.

Brother Swetnam, 60, died Sunday January 13 2008 from cancer. A 37-year veteran of the department Mike worked as an operational firefighter from 1971 until 2002 when he moved to the Fire Prevention Division. We believe his passing to be the first under the Presumptive Cancer Legislation in New Brunswick. Arrangements are being made for a full departmental funeral and as details become available we will forward them to you. We request and would appreciate your attendance at this event.

Dec 20, 2007 - Cancer Legislation update
The Fire Fighters of New Brunswick now have Presumptive Cancer Legislation. The regulations are not yet finalized, but the details are being worked out now.

December 12, 2007 - Cancer Legislation
The New Brunswick Legislature will see Presumptive Cancer Legislation going through "2nd reading" tomorrow. The legislation appears to have all the cancers that are recognized in other jurisdictions, in addition to "heart injury" incurred within 24 hours of attending at an emergency. We will have a presence at the Legislature tomorrow and for the 3rd reading (date to be determined). We will be looking for a large show of support for the enactment of the legislation which will likely occur in the new year.

A large turnout of Firefighters from all over New Brunswick turned out for the 9/11 parade in Saint John this evening.

September, 2007 - APPFFA Elections
Congratulations to John McCarthy on his re-election as APPFFA President, Also congratulations to Andrew Hawkes on his election as Secretary/Treasurer, Dave Burry on his election to VP for Newfoundland, Steve Pertus on his election to VP Nove Scotia, and Alex Chaulk, Peter Smith, and John Courtenay on thier re-elections.

June 2007 - Kennebecasis Firefighters Union recognized for work with MD
Earlier this spring, the Kennebecasis Valley FD was awarded Atlantic Region Fire Department of the year. A short time later, Brother Robert MacLeod, Local 3591's MD advisor, was notified that the department had also been named Fire Department of the Year for Canada. On behalf of his fellow firefighters, Brother MacLeod accepted this honour in Toronto in early June.

June 8, 2007 - Presumptive Legislation Update
Today, New Brunswick Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, Hon. Ed Doherty stated that work had begun on a bill dealing with cancer coverage for Firefighters and announced the government's intent to bring forward legislation this fall.

May 16, 2007 - Staffing in Oromocto
Oromocto Local 1576 reports that as of October 6, 2007 , they will see the minimum manning for their department rise from 3 to 4. This is a great step for enhanced fire fighter safety and bodes well as they prepare for collective bargaining.

May 7, 2007 - Convention News
Members from APPFFA affiliated Locals are preparing for the upcoming convention and seminar in St. John's NL. This promises to be a great event with all of the hospitality that the Sisters and Brothers from St. John's are famous for. In addition we will be discussing issues crucial to firefighters in the Atlantic region and the APPFFA in particular, as well as taking in some very pertinent training. Get those rooms booked.

May 4, 2007 - Presumptive Legislation News
The IAFF’s 10,000 members in the province of Ontario are the latest in Canada to be protected by presumptive legislation that automatically awards workers compensation benefits to fire fighters who contract certain cancers or suffer heart injuries in the course of their duties.

- St John's NF L1075 received an award recognizing excellence in fundraising, public relations and advocacy work

Sept 9, 2005 - Shawnee Main represents the 15th district at Telethon
Firefighter Shawnee Main, L1053 Fredericton (4th from left), represented the IAFF's 15th district on the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s 2005 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon held September 4-5. Firefighters raised more than $21 million and over $1 million was donated to the relief effort along the US gulf coast.

Halifax Local 268 opens hospice
The Sisters and Brothers of Halifax Local 268 have a hospice room available at the University and Robie Street fire station in the south end of Halifax.

Any members of the fire service can use this facility free of charge. It is close to all hospitals in Halifax and can be used by members if they have a family member in the hospital or have appointments with hospital staff.

August 4 2005 - Convention Update
The 2005 APPFFA Convention wrapped up today. Delegates were visited by IAFF General President Harold Shaitberger. There were several changes to the executive board as well.

15th District names MD representative
Shawnee Main from Local 1053 (Fredericton NB) will represent the 15th district of the IAFF and the APPFFA at the MD telethon to be held Labour Day weekend in Beverly Hills, California.

May 2005 - Memramcook NB
The Canadian Legislative Conference took place May 1 to 4, 2005 in Ottawa

Fire fighters from across Canada brought four critically-important issues forward during the IAFF's 13th Canadian Legislative Conference May 1 to 4 in Ottawa; national haz-mat and CBRN training, the establishment of a federal PSOC benefit, the need for a national office for fire statistics and CPP reform for professional fire fighters.

November 2004 - Memramcook NB
The APPFFA educational seminar took place November 14-18 in Memramcook NB.

There were presentations and or exercises on the following: APPFFA Website, Grass Roots Political Action, Public Speaking for the Labour Movement, Labour Law Development, Arbitration, Preparation and Process, Health Benefits.

Speakers included Jim Lee (IAFF Assistant to the General President for Canadian Operations), IAFF 15th District VP Jim Fennell and Labour Lawyer Sean McManus.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that I met with Minister Blaney last month to discuss our stalled cancer legislation, the recent defeat of two private member bills to make amendments to the Workers' Compensation Act for fire fighters, and 2 in 2 out wording pertaining to the occupational health and safety of fire fighters. I will be following up these issues with her and keep you all up to date.
